Rob Maschio Fondly Recalls His 'Scrubs' High-Fives & Banana Hammock

On this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Zach Braff and Donald Faison welcome on “the number one requested guest,” Robert Maschio, who played High-Five Todd on Scrubs! They talk about the episode “My Lucky Night,” discussing the famous banana hammock, how Rob got the part, being broke in L.A., dating in a pandemic, whether or not a super hot nanny is a good idea, Rob’s real estate career, and what it would be like to know your girlfriend is always hanging out with her ex, because of how Scott Foley's character Sean has to deal with J.D. and Elliott working together in this episode. Then they talk to Scrubs fan Devon, a musical theatre actress who asks them which Broadway musical they’d like to be in and what role they would play, and gets some online dating tips so she can find her soulmate.

Rob met Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence ten years before the show aired – he was in a play that Bill wrote, and they remained friends afterwards. Rob auditioned for a lot of high-profile parts, including Joey on Friends, and says that Bill would always be rooting so hard for him to land the gig that he would be more disappointed than Rob when it didn’t work out. So when he was working on Scrubs, he actually wrote the part of Todd for Rob, as a funny counterpart to Donald’s Turk character. Rob had decided to stay in New York and do theatre, so Bill had to convince him to come to L.A. by promising to lend him a car for the first six months. His character quickly became a fan favorite; Rob even did several conventions (in the countries he most wanted to visit), passing out temporary “Doc” tattoos to all his fans.

He tells Zach and Donald all about how the flame-covered banana hammock was selected, and how he attempted to enhance his package so his entrance would get a really big laugh, but couldn’t tell if it was necessary. So he called producer Randall Winston into his dressing room; “I just said, ‘Take a look at this!’ and dropped my pants,” Rob laughs. Randall reassured him that he was just fine the way he was; “It’s the cut of the brief that makes the man!” he jokes. Then Devon comes on and they recast Scrubs with the Muppets, talk about musicals they’d like to be in, and wonder exactly how much land you have to be cultivating to qualify for the Farmers Only dating app; “Does my vegetable garden count?” Zach asks. Hear the whole hilarious conversation with Rob Maschio on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
