On this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Zach Braff and Donald Faison are joined by Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence to talk about the kiss between J.D. and Carla, explain why so many jokes in “My Big Move” happen off-camera, and laugh about the Janitor not being able to scare anyone in his light blue uniform. Donald also talks about the reworking of PowerPuff Girls, Zach got a sweet Ted Lasso-themed gift on the set of Cheaper By the Dozen, no one has watched Zach’s episode of Solos yet (and he’s pretty salty about it), and Bill interrupts himself with pre-recorded interview questions, much to the delight of Donald and their producer Joelle Monique. Plus, they have incredible guests: an attractive Midwestern couple who explain exactly how it feels when your wife sleeps with your best friend.

Bill explains that around halfway through any show, the writers start getting “a little punch-drunk,” which is probably why the J.D. and Carla storyline even exists, or why they decided it would be funnier if the audience only saw the aftermath of a joke rather than the joke itself (like Turk destroying the cafeteria, or how we never see the Janitor’s drawings of his uniform designs). “It’s like the halfway point for the show – on the one hand, we knew what we were doing and there’s a lot of funny stuff,” Bill says. “On the other hand, this is where the show is teetering a little bit; we were getting tired.” He wonders if Zach and Donald will feel that way about this podcast and asks what they’ll talk about once they’re done rewatching Scrubs; they throw out several ideas, including interviews, old Eddie Murphy movies from the 1980s, short-lived shows that were actually good, or dissecting a show with a similar fanbase, like Community. “I think you should do a re-listen of this podcast,” Bill jokes, “and judge yourselves on your performance.”

They go through all their favorite jokes and moments, like Ted’s yellow tie, the Janitor’s secret mop tattoo, and Todd’s “giant and very phallic hot dog;” but then it’s time for their amazing guests, Michelle and Joseph, who answer the call from last week’s episode to tell Zach and Donald how someone could ever get over their best friend sleeping with their spouse. They tell their story to the guys, and they end up very impressed with the couple’s maturity and love for one another. Though Bill admits, “The only way that anyone would hear the story of me hooking up with my wife’s friend would be on Dateline. They’d be trying to figure out what happened to Bill Lawrence, and at the end they’d go, ‘Why is all the carpeting removed from Christa [Miller]’s trunk?’” Hear the entire hilarious episode, complete with new guest song, a Joshua Radin outro, and Interrupting Bill interrupting Bill, on Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
