FLYERS SIGN D SHAYNE GOSTISBEHERE TO CONTRACT EXTENSION

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed D Shayne Gostisbehere to a multiyear contract extension, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

“It’s a dream come true to be part of one of the best organizations in hockey,” Gostisbehere said. “With everything that’s going on here – we’ve got some young guys coming up and we’ve already got some key pieces – it’s nice to know you’re part of the future and part of the plans. There’s many more steps to come and hopefully it leads to some great things. It’s a tremendous honor to realize you’re part of the future.”

Gostisbehere, 24 (4/20/1993), is entering his third full season with the Flyers. The 5-8, 180-lb native of Pembroke Pines, Florida recorded seven goals and 32 assists for 39 points in 76 games this past season, leading all Flyers defensemen in scoring and ranking fifth overall on the team.

Gostisbehere enjoyed a breakout rookie season in 2015-16, posting 17 goals and 29 assists for 46 points. He won the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the Flyers’ best defenseman and finished second in voting for the Calder Trophy given to the NHL’s Rookie of the Year. Gostisbehere scored four overtime goals over the course of the season, becoming the first NHL rookie to do so, and set Flyers and NHL records with a 15-game scoring streak from January 19 to February 20, 2016. Gostisbehere was also voted to the league’s All-Rookie team. In 142 career NHL games, Gostisbehere has 24 goals and 61 assists for 85 points.

Prior to joining the Flyers, Gostisbehere played three seasons at Union College, culminating with a national championship in 2014. He was selected by the Flyers in the third round (78th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
